Those
glorious day of summer spent at Laguna Beach swimming and skin
diving at Shaws Cove.

Welcome
aboard--This site is to show the early days of skin-diving and the
equipment we had, a lot of it we developed ourselves, and resulted
in great rewards for our efforts.

This is how skin diving was done in
the past - before the use of air tank breathing apparatus--often
referred to as the Aqua Lung.
We
dove as deep as we could without the benefit of scuba equipment
and such. At first we used small goggles that really pressed into
your eyes at any great depth. We made our own 6 foot hand spears
with a 5-point spearhead and abalone irons we ground out of old
spring sheaves. We dove down under the reefs into caves to find
the California Spiny Lobster. In these same caves the delicious
abalone's green, pink, and white types abounded. The larger red
was found further north. Just out of the breaker line on the sandy
bottom we found the California Halibut and under the huge kelp beds
were Calico Bass.

Shaws
Cove in Laguna Beach California about 1940.
Shaws
Cove - was the central point of much of our diving.
We dove under great kelp beds lying
on the surface of crystal clear water. Gliding down under the
fronds in the muted shafts of sunlight was like entering a
cathedral -- all was silence as this was before the noisy bubbling
of the scuba gear now in use.

Much
of what you see here took place prior to World War II. But you will
also see many post WWII pictures.il
Below is one of many pictures of
our toothsome rewards--.
